Bruks-Kloeckner: New micro-woodchips for pellets production
01/06/2007 - 14:22
Pellet WoodchipsThere are pellets and there are woodchips. But now there are micro-woodchips. Simply put, these are pellets made from woodchips, and these are produced in a much more cost-effective and energy efficient way. That, in short, is the success story that is taking shape at Bruks-Kloeckner GmbH at Westerwald in the form of this new product, which celebrated its launch at this year’s LIGNA trade show. For one year, the engineers at the Hirtscheid plant have been working on a revolutionary new drum chipper which Microchips drum chipperhas exceeded all expectations. The project was commissioned by a Swedish energy company and the aim was to simplify the manufacturing process of pellets in a more cost-effective way. “We have succeeded in eliminating an entire stage of the production process for the manufacturing of pellets,” said Werner Schweinsberg, Managing Director of Bruks-Kloeckner GmbH. The conventional method of pellet manufacture involves cutting logs into standard 30mm chips before undergoing the expensive process of grinding and pressing into pellets. “In the future, we will be able to save our customers from this costly process,” says Schweinsberg. “Our drum chippers produce wood chips that are smaller than 7mm which are instantly dried and pressed into pellets. That really is quite sensational in today’s booming pellet market.”

Bruks Kloeckner Ligna HanoverThe concept of micro-woodchips is not new to Bruks-Kloeckner GmbH. The company have been providing drum chippers to the food industry for many years, largely smokehouses. These drum chippers can produce woodchips in sizes ranging from 12mm to 4mm, but the quantity of woodchips required is relatively small. “An energy company has of course, different requirements, and the rise in demand in this area was a challenge for us,” recalls Schweinsberg. “Not only were we tested on our technical know-how, but our entire competency in project management was also challenged.” The two gigantic drum chippers for Scandinavia are expected to produce an ambitious 60 tonnes of micro-woodchips per hour respectively. And results and customer satisfaction speak for themselves. “Not only do we provide a great product for our customers, but we also offer a complete solution,” sums up Schweinsberg. “And it works, from the conception of our products to the after-care services we provide.”
