Ligna+ 2007 Horizontal band saw instead of frame saws
06/08/2007 - 16:13
Wood Mizer Horizontalbandsaege The horizontal band saw is added to the existing frame saw in more and more saw mills. Consequently all the well known producers of mobile saws took a position at the Ligna+ from 14th to 18th of May 2007 in Hanover with stationary profi models. Would a horizontal band saw on its own be enough?

Hans Fritz, jr.Managing Director at Serra, estimates that every other of the burgundy coloured band saws is operated stationary. The mobile modes (Filius, Montana ME90/MD90, Bavaria SL 130i) Serra Nachschnittsaegen were traditionally shown at the openair area of the trade fair, Serra presented stationary concepts in the hall 27. Serra offers solutions for cutting capacities up to 60 cbm per shift in cooperation with the specialist for resaws, Maschinenfabrik Paul. The flexible horizontal band saws are being combined with circular resaws from Paul. The saw miller is able to cut trunks in almost all kinds of lengths and widths spending a comparatively small amount of money on the machines.
Hans Fritz reduces the use of combinations from horizontal band saw plus edger/resaw to markets with low wages. Despite the tilting unit for the timber one needs a lot of personel for these machines. Serra-Paul-Combinations are working for years successfully in Russia. “The demand from frame saw mills who put up a band saw as well is constantly growing in Germany”, refers Fritz to the increasingly bigger part of special dimensional saws in the saw mills up to 30,000 cbm cutting capacity.

Josef Zenz presented the Wimmer-Saw in the hall only. 70% of all saws being sold are stationary versions. A lot of Russian costumers buy the stationary saws from Zenz.
PEzzolato Mobilsaegen The target group of Walter Ries, Managing Director at Pezzolato Germany, are custom saw mills – so far mostly equipped with frame saws. Ries reckons that there are still potential buyers for horizontal band saws on the Middle European market whereas the market for mobile saws is saturated. One has widened the sawing technology to the smaller models with the stationary Mini Profi after the Double-Cut-bands were already used for the forwards- and backwards cut with the model Super Profi. (see Video: Pezzolato Bandsäge: 30% Zeitersparnis).

Wood Mizer small log procesing “Only 55,000 € but one needs five people to word on it” – Klaus Longmuss, Wood Mizer Germany, didn´t led any doubts come up about the possible target countries for this line of saws SLP (small log processing). The aim of this saw consisting of five LT70 sawing heads is to go on processing small pieces of trunks. This construction is interesting for producers of packaging timber in Eastern Europe and the Far East. One also mentions the plantations in Africa as a target group at Wood Mizer. The five machines need only 78 kW of electricity. The whole construction is therefore also able to work in areas without any infrastructure with a generator only. This line of construction consists of a vertical twin band saw, one vertical one head saw to remove the third side, an edger and a horizontal one head band saw (alternatively multi head saw) for resawing the scantling.
