U.S. softwood and panel markets

Framing lumber trading cooled considerably from prior weeks as secondaries and dealers stepped back to digest recent purchases. Carrying upward momentum from the previous week into early trading, prices of many items advanced, sometimes sharply, but gains subsided as the week progressed. Demand for Southern Pine -- the leader in the recent rally -- waned, but sales of radius-edge decking and timbers picked up. Elsewhere, mills approached the market from a position of strength.

Structural panel trading slowed. Supply-side pressure kept upward momentum on prices of OSB, but the pace of sales ebbed in the second half of the week in most producing zones. Southern Pine plywood markets flattened after seven weeks of steady gains. Carryover from last week provided enough momentum for producers to raise quotes early and sell at the higher levels. But sales stalled by midweek. Fir plywood sales lagged the robust pace of late April. Many mills sold less than output for the second week in a row.
