Slovenia: Number of housing units up 16% in 2007
02/09/2008 - 16:50
Ljubljana. Almost 25,000 housing units were under construction in 2007, which is 16% more than in the year before, while 8,357 (34%) of housing units were completed by the end of 2007, the National Statistics Office reported on Tuesday.

A quarter of the housing units were constructed in central Slovenia. The Municipality of Ljubljana had 685 new housing units, while the Maribor Municipality had 695 new housing units at the end of 2007, the office said.

The average net floor area of the newly constructed housing units was 111 m², with the average housing unit size in single-apartment buildings standing at 159 m² and in multi-apartment buildings at 79 m². The bulk of the housing units completed (96%) were newly constructed units. The number of housing units in Slovenia stood at 820,400 at the end of the last year, according to the office. The average size of housing units in Slovenia is 77 m². Almost a half of the housing units are located in urban areas and they have an average net floor area of m². Housing units in rural areas are 10 m² larger on average.

Over a half of the housing units in Slovenia were constructed between 1971 and 2007. Construction was the most intensive in the 1970s, as apartments constructed in the period represent 23% of all housing units. At the end of 2007, 20% of apartments were without central heating and 7% without a bathroom.
